Fat Face is a British lifestyle clothes and accessories firm headquartered in Hampshire. There has been a presence in the industry since 1997. Tim Slade and Jules Leaver started the company in 1988 with the goal of selling T-shirts in ski resorts all over the world. Fat Face stores in the UK and Ireland now number a whopping 209, a huge growth since the company’s inception in 1993.

Tim Slade, a former police officer, and Jules Leaver, a business graduate, founded the company in Méribel, France, in 1988. It was at this point that the pair decided to start selling t-shirts they had printed with designs special to the resort, which they then re-sold to other skiers on the mountain. After that, they travelled to other ski resorts, where they continued to produce and sell outdoor gear for several more years. Fat Face’s first store was located at London’s Fulham Road in 1993 and called after the Face de Bellevarde hill in Val-d’Isère. Livingbridge purchased the couple’s stake in the business in 2000 for £5 million. An investment group called Advent International purchased Livingbridge’s shares and renamed the company FatFace.

Bridgepoint Capital bought Fat Face from Slade and Leaver in 2007 for £360 million, making a profit of £90 million for the duo. For Bridgepoint, the Great Recession had a devastating effect on sales and resulted in the company writing off half its value. It was only in 2012 that Fat Face recovered to a little profit, but the company’s revenues increased in 2010. To raise $110 million, Bridgepoint planned to list a fourth of the company on the London Stock Exchange in 2014, however the plan was cancelled when potential investors raised doubts about the company’s future prospects. Liz Evans was named CEO in March, succeeding Anthony Thompson, who stepped down in March. At Oasis/Warehouse, Evans held the position of CEO. Former Marks and Spencer Chief Executive Stuart Rose was appointed by Bridgepoint in 2013 as FatFace’s Chairman, replacing Alan Giles who had been Chairman since 2007. They informed customers and workers in 2021 that they had paid a $2 million ransom to cyber thieves working on behalf of Conti to disclose encrypted material in January of that year.
