History – Waterstones
Tim Waterstone came up with the concept for Waterstones in 1982. Over the succeeding decades, they grew into a cultural icon in Britain, hiring around 3000 skilled booksellers across more than 280 locations.
They are pleased to have made it through the rise of e-readers and internet competition and are launching an aggressive growth plan under the direction of Managing Director James Daunt. In recent years, the United States has seen an explosion of both new enterprises and the relocation or renovation of older ones. To get closer to these ambitious objectives, the company has lately opened up shop in ritzier areas like Reigate and Clifton and moved its locations in Edinburgh and Manchester to the Trafford Centre.
Store managers have a lot of autonomy to meet the needs of their communities, unlike at many other national chains, and receive limited direction from corporate. They take great pleasure in bringing attention to books that are just good (but are often overlooked), a practice that was pioneered by their success in making John Williams’ Stoner a bestseller forty years after its initial publication.
Waterstones.com, in addition to its brick-and-mortar locations, strives to provide the Waterstones experience to every home and smartphone in the United Kingdom. With innovative projects like the weekly reading update Waterstones Weekly and an ever-expanding portfolio of one-of-a-kind reader incentives and signed editions, Waterstones.com is the perfect online counterpart to its High Street bookshops. Click & Collect, a service that seamlessly integrates the two, has grown in popularity alongside them because it offers clients the best of both worlds.
Here at Waterstones, they take pride in offering freshly roasted coffee, an extensive book collection, one-of-a-kind gifts, and staff people who are truly invested in their jobs.
