What is Wicked?
Wicked is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Winnie Holzman. It is based on the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, an alternative telling of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz and L. Frank Baum’s classic storybook. The story centers on Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West, and her relationship with Galinda, the future Good Witch of the East.
The two come from different backgrounds and have opposing personalities, but they eventually become best friends. The pair must grapple with issues of prejudice, morality, and what it truly means to be wicked. Along the way, they encounter colorful characters such as the Lion, Tinman, Scarecrow, and Dorothy Gale. Wicked is ultimately a story about acceptance, friendship, and finding one’s true identity.
