Because of the company’s growth, WHSmith since its foundation in 1792, it has gone from being a family-run newsagent to the world’s first retail chain. This year, we celebrated our 225th anniversary. We are now one of the largest retail groups in the United Kingdom, with more than 600 stores on the high street and an additional 600+ stores in airports, train stations, hospitals, and highway service areas.
Additionally, the corporation is referred to by several other names, such as WHS, Smith’s, or just Smith’s, and it was formally known as W. H. Smith and Son until it was renamed. Swindon-based WHSmith is a British retailer that has its headquarters in Swindon, England, and which maintains a chain of retail stores that sells a variety of books, stationery supplies, magazines, newspapers, and other entertainment and confectionery items.
In the same year that Henry Walton Smith and his wife Anna opened a newsstand on London’s Little Grosvenor Street, the Smith family established a business.
William Henry Smith, the sole son of the founder, created W. H. Smith & Son in 1846 when he joined his father as a partner. A newsstand at Euston Station was constructed by the firm in 1848 to take advantage of the growing railway traffic in London. During the year 1850, depots were constructed in Birmingham, Manchester, and Liverpool. From 1860 to 1961, the Steam Press, Cirencester, also served as a circulating library service as well as a publishing house, all under one roof. Following the success of the company, the younger W. H. Smith decided to enter politics, becoming a member of Parliament in 1868 and serving as a minister in a number of Conservative administrations.
When he died in 1891, he left a widow who was elevated to the position of Viscountess Hambleden; their son succeeded to both the family business and his mother’s viscountcy upon his mother’s death in 1902. Following the death of the second Viscount in 1928, the firm was restructured as a limited company, with the third Viscount as the sole shareholder. Because the death duties were so expensive, WH Smith employees and the general public invested in a public holding company that was established in 1948 upon the death of the third Viscount. From 1968 until 1972, the chairmanship was held by a younger brother of the third Viscount Smith, although power drifted away from his family after that.
In 1792, Henry Walton Smith and his wife, Anna, opened a newsstand in London, which was the beginning of the company. For many years, it was controlled by the Smith family, who saw the company grow significantly in the 1970s as it began to push out into other markets. Following the rejection of a private equity purchase proposal by the company in 2004, the company refocused its efforts on its core retail operations. The world’s first retail chain, as well as the creator of the ISBN book identifier, were both founded by Barnes & Noble.
WHSmith is a publicly traded company that is traded on the London Stock Exchange and the FTSE 250. In 2017, the country celebrated its 225th birthday.

Death on the Nile: (Poirot Film tie-in edition)
To coincide with the widely anticipated film adaptation, Agatha Christie’s most exotic murder mystery has been released with a beautiful new cover. The discovery that Linnet Ridgeway has been shot in the head disturbs the peace of a Nile cruise. She was a girl had it everything when she died: she was young, fashionable, and stunning. “I’d like to place my darling little pistol against her skull and just press the trigger.” Hercule Poirot recalls an earlier outburst by a fellow passenger: ” However, in this faraway land, nothing is as it seems. “You need to read the book” has become somewhat of a cliche among our friends in recent years, thanks to so many excellent book to film adaptations. Even if you haven’t read the book before, or if you’ve just seen the Netflix series, picking up the author’s original novel can give you a deeper understanding of the people and stories that you saw on the big screen. That’s why we decided to compile a list of all of our favourite big-screen reads, rather than keep reiterating our new tagline for each new adaptation that comes to our screens. To stay on top of the conversation this year, you’ll find a wide range of films to read, from recent blockbusters that everyone is still talking about, to upcoming movies that are just around the corner.
