Originally a London newsstand, the company was started in 1792 by Henry Walton Smith and his wife, Anna. The Smith family held the company for many years before it was sold to a private equity firm in the 1980s. First retail chain in the world and inventor of the ISBN book identifier system were both owned by Barnes & Noble.

Henry Walton Smith and his wife Anna founded a newsstand in Little Grosvenor Street, London, in 1792. When William Henry Smith, Smith’s only child, joined as a partner in 1846, W. H. Smith & Son was born. In an effort to take advantage of the burgeoning railroad industry, the business erected a newsstand in 1848 at Euston. In 1850, the firm established its first depots in Birmingham, Manchester, and Liverpool. From 1860 to 1961, Cirencester’s Steam Press also ran a circulating library service and a publishing company. Because of the firm’s success, the younger Smith could enter politics in 1868 and serve as a minister in several Conservative administrations.
When W. H. Smith the junior died in 1891, Viscount Hambleden was created in her own right; her son inherited the business from his father and the viscountcy from her. She was succeeded by her son. He became the sole owner of the limited firm after the death of his father, the Second Viscount, in 1928. In 1948, WH Smith workers and the general public invested in a public holding company created after the death of the third Viscount due to the high death duties. An older sibling of the third Viscount has served as chairman since 1972; the Smith family’s influence has diminished since 1996, when the last member of the family resigned from the board of directors.

SBN is an acronym for Standard Book Numbering, a nine-digit code used by WH Smith in 1966 to uniquely identify books. Before it became an ISBN scheme, it had been an ISO 2108 standard since 1970.
