ROYAL ALEXANDRA THEATRE
Edward VII gave formal letters patent entitling the theatre to the royal designation and his permission to name it after his consort, Alexandra, making the Royal Alexandra Theatre a national historic landmark and the oldest continuously running legitimate theatre in North America. The theatre was commissioned in 1907 from architect John M. Lyle and built by Toronto’s “boy millionaire,” Cawthra Mulock. It is a masterpiece of beaux-arts architecture and also holds the distinction of being the first steel-framed structure in the city (allowing for cantilevered balconies), one of the first “air-conditioned” buildings in North America, and the first legitimately “fireproof” theatre in North America. Its proscenium stage has hosted almost 3,400 productions since it opened, with stars like John Gielgud, Mary Pickford, the Marx Brothers, Edith Piaf, and Paul Robeson, to mention just a few.
PRINCESS OF WALES THEATRE
The father-and-son producing duo of David and Ed Mirvish constructed this state-of-the-art, 2,000-seat theatre, which debuted with the Canadian premiere of Miss Saigon on May 26, 1993. It was the first privately built, stand-alone theatre in North America in over 50 years, and the first in Canada since the historic Royal Alexandra Theatre, (located just one block away) opened in 1907. The building was designed by architect Peter Smith, with interior design by the (then up-and-coming) world-renowned design firm Yabu Pushelberg, and featured artwork by the brilliant Frank Stella. The theatre has since established itself as a major hub for both established and up-and-coming musicals.
CAA ED MIRVISH THEATRE
For more than a century, what is now called the CAA Ed Mirvish Theatre has been the beating heart of Toronto’s thriving arts and theatre community. Its two-level theatre can accommodate anywhere from 2300 to 1800 to 1200 audience members, making it ideal for productions of all sizes. Its address is 263 Yonge Street (below Dundas Street), but the building’s primary entrance and box office are actually at 244 Victoria Street. Ticket holders are welcome to enter through either door, but those with mobility issues are encouraged to use the Victoria Street entry, which provides direct elevator access to the theater’s main foyer, box office, and Orchestra seating level.
CAA THEATRE
The CAA Theatre can be found in the centre of downtown Toronto at 651 Yonge Street, just south of Bloor. After being a private house from 1911 to 1919 (when it became “The Victory”), the building was converted into a movie theatre and later a live theatre, becoming known as “The New Yorker Theatre” in 1993. Only the exterior remains from when it was torn down in 2005 and replaced with a 700-seat, state-of-the-art theatre and performance hall. In 2008, it was acquired by Mirvish Productions, and on December 1, 2018, as part of a new collaboration with CAA, the company adopted its current name.
