In 2000, my husband and I launched their chocolate company, Montezuma’s, with a machine the size of a kitchen sink, buckets of excitement and a lofty goal of introducing chocolate innovation to the stale and conservative British chocolate market. Except for that very first machine, not much has changed, and the same childlike excitement they all felt when they first set out to explore South America in 1999 still greets them each morning.
As former lawyers-turned-chocolate-makers, we’ve had to endure some challenging learning curves and do a lot of reinventing the wheel, but we’ve done it all out of a genuine desire to manufacture chocolate that we’d actually want to consume in a setting that they find enjoyable. What they didn’t prepare for, and what they never would have believed possible, is that a firm established with so little capital would grow to become the most forward-thinking chocolate brand in Britain.
They had always envisioned the principles by which they would operate Montezuma’s, should they ever have the opportunity to do so, long before they opened for business. These goals materialised and have guided them ever since they first set out.Although they may have tweaked the wording here and there over the years, their core values—which they refer to as “Business Done Properly”—have remained unchanged.

When they needed a board to put at Chocolate HQ demonstrating their Purpose, Vision, and Values, they asked their resident artist Amy (who can also be found assisting clients with their chocolate purchases in their Chichester store) to make one, and she did a great job.
