Brief History of Saltrock
In 1988, SALTROCK was founded by two brothers who had a passion for surfing. Both brothers made the long journey to London for one reason: to surf. With the instructions, “Take them to the nearest place there’s surf,” inscribed on their tickets, the gang boarded the next train bound for the shore.
Two artists, Angus and Ross, were having a blast in Cornwall until they realized they had spent all their money. From the back of an Austin Allegro, they blacked out the trunk using tape, nails, and a rug from the Salvation Army, printing and selling T-shirts with original designs inspired by surfing. In addition, they improvised a printing screen from components they had scavenged or been given. Saltrock was chosen as the name of a new firm in South Africa as a tribute to the founders’ favorite surfing spot.
The concepts skyrocketed in popularity. The style that the brothers produced was so unique and captivating that it acquired over a loyal fan base among southern and western surfers, which resulted in a shortage of the product.
They’re still running out of the same studio in Devon where they dream up their one-of-a-kind surf-inspired creations.
Their original works are motivated by the principles they hold most important. The fact that Saltrock‘s original client base is still rocking its vintage threads is evidence that the firm is committed to providing high-quality items that have a long shelf life.
