High street retailer Wilko (2014–present) is a subsidiary of Wilko Ltd., which was founded in 1930 as Wilkinson Cash Stores and Wilkinson Hardware Stores. James Kemsey Wilkinson began the business in Leicester in 1930, and it is now run by members of his family.

As a branch manager in 1960, Tony Wilkinson succeeded his father as chairman and retired in June 2005, becoming the company’s longest serving chairman. Lisa Wilkinson, his daughter, and Karin Swann, his niece, replaced him. A year later, Karin Swann sold her family’s 50 percent stake in the company to Lisa Wilkinson.

Homewares, textiles, DIY, cleaning supplies, health and beauty care products, stationery and confectionary for pets, as well as kitchen and bathroom needs make up the bulk of Wilko’s product portfolio. In the summer, Wilko sells gardening supplies, while in the fall and winter, the retailer offers holiday décor and a broader selection of toys and games.

Wilko’s first own-label product was paint in 1973, and by 2020, Wilko will have over 14,000 own-label items accounting for more than half of its annual sales.

Existing buildings at Syston, Charnwood, served as the company’s first warehouse and offices, which were inaugurated in 1938. A purpose-built warehouse on Brighton Road in Leicester was the first to be used by Wilko when it opened in 1937. It was decided to move the company’s headquarters and warehouse from Nottinghamshire to Carlton in Lindrick, where a “high-bay” stacking system was set up. Manton Wood, Worksop, Nottinghamshire, is the present location of Wilko’s primary distribution centre (DC1). It boasted the UK’s fastest sorting system when it opened. Opened in 2000, Magor’s second distribution centre (DC2) is located in the south of Wales.

In March 2017, Wincanton plc was awarded a five-year logistics contract to replace Canute Haulage Group, which had served the company for 29 years.

Over a new weekend working plan at the distribution centres, the GMB Union announced a strike in September 2019. After Wilko offered a better deal, the planned strikes for four dates in October 2019 were cancelled.
