B&Q

by Top Fashion Around

It is a division of Kingfisher plc and operates as a British multinational DIY and home improvement retailing company with headquarters in Eastleigh, United Kingdom. When Richard Block and David Quayle began their retail network in 1969, they called it Block & Quayle. Today, the company sells more than 40,000 items in 300 physical stores and online.

Some of the company’s locations can also be found in Ireland, according to its website. A lot of enterprises in China were forced to close in 2015 due to their inability to make a profit.

It was founded in Southampton in March 1969 by Richard Block and David Quayle, who purchased a derelict furniture factory in the city’s Portswood district and transformed it into a retail space. Originally, the company was known as Block & Quayle, but due to the abbreviation on stock delivery notes and invoices, the two founders decided to reduce the name to B&Q.

It took them only six months to pay off their bank overdraft, and after five years in business, they had created a total revenue of £1 million, thanks to their sixty-hour, six-day-a-week work schedules, which they had maintained throughout.

In the years following Block’s departure from the company in 1976, the company expanded rapidly, and by 1979, it had twenty-six outlets in the United Kingdom.

When B&Q first opened its doors in 2000, it had fifty-one huge warehouse stores; by 2003, this number had more than doubled. B&Q has 359 locations and 20,887 employees in the United Kingdom as of May 2014, and also owned eight stores in the Republic of Ireland.

Earlier this year, Kingfisher revealed that it planned to close 60 B&Q locations across the United Kingdom and Ireland over the next two years. As a result of this decision, many of Europe’s loss-making businesses would be forced to close their doors. According to the findings of this study, B&Q UK and Ireland may be better able to service their local clients if they have fewer locations, and some of those locations may even be smaller.
