Henry Walton Smith and his wife Anna opened a successful newsstand in London’s Little Grosvenor Street in 1792, and it remained in their control until the early twentieth century. William Henry Smith became sole owner of the family business in 1812, a year after the death of his father and mother, which had been valued at $1,280 (equal to $87,161 in today’s money). Because William Henry Smith’s only son, also named William Henry, became a partner, the firm’s name was changed to W. H. Smith & Son. The company took advantage of the growing railroad industry by opening newsstands at railway stations across the country, starting with Euston in 1848. The cities of Birmingham, Manchester, and Liverpool were among the several that opened depots in 1850. After years of decline in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the Cirencester Steam Press, which housed a library and publishing enterprise from 1860 to 1961, was forced to close its doors. As a result of the company’s national notoriety following its triumph in 1868, Smith’s younger brother was elected to Parliament and served as a cabinet member in several conservative governments.
His widow was promoted to the title of Viscountess after W.H.S. died in 1891, and their son inherited both the family company and the viscountcy. When his father, the second Viscount, passed away in 1928, his son, the third Viscount, became the sole stakeholder of the company. In order to pay the third Viscount’s death duties in 1948, a public holding company had to be formed and shares sold to the general public. This was a legal requirement. Smith family members have held positions on the organization’s board of directors since 1972, beginning when the third Viscount’s younger brother held the position of chairman.
One of the stalls at Horsted Keynes railway station in Sussex, run by the National Railway Museum’s Bluebell Railway, has been preserved. In 1986, a WHSmith store in Huntington, England, adopted the former design. WHSmith introduced a nine-digit identification mechanism in 1966 for books that could only be referred to once. The International Standard Book Number (ISBN) has replaced the International Standard Organization for Standardization (ISO 2108) since its inception in 1970.
